Dudesweet First Poster (2002)

We never called ourselves an underground party. We didn’t really know what it took to be one. But looking back now, like, just now, today. I think we were everything you could call one.

This was our first poster. We didn’t even have a name of a party yet. We thought it was a one-off. A week later we realized it needed one, so we rushed to print stickers and plastered them over the posters that were already up. The name came from a scene in “Dude, Where’s My Car?” Off a VHS tape someone had rented and never returned. Cameras were hard to come by. We only have 3 photos from that first night, and there were around 60 people there.

We’d been renting a house together since university and were still there years after graduating. Most of us were unemployed, getting by on odd jobs: painting walls, doing illustration work, cutting stickers, whatever we could find. And if someone scored a video gig, we’d sneak the camera home and spend the weekend making stupid little films where we took turns dying.

Four people paid the rent. Ten or more drifted in and out. Every weekend friends would just show up, and eventually we thought, ok. why not make it a real party?

Life back then wasn’t great. But it was liveable.
